 Why Hemp?

Hemp or industrial hemp (Cannabis Sativa), is a botanical class of Cannabis sativa cultivars grown specifically for industrial or medicinal use. The cotton & hemp wick candle performed just as well as cotton, and maybe even just a bit better. Combined with our 100% soy wax, the hemp wicks provided an excellent flame and stronger hot throw than either the cotton or wooden wicks paired with our same wax.

Few other crops boast the environmental benefits of hemp. The hemp plant is super versatile. Every part of a hemp plant has commercial value and can be used in everything from textiles and clothing to bioplastics and even food.

The stems contain valuable fibers, and the edible seeds are rich in oil. In addition to being able to use the whole plant, hemp crops utilize less water than cotton and when you add processing into the equation, cotton uses more than four times as much water as hemp. Hemp is less dependent on herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides to grow than other monoculture crops.

As a crop, it requires less land, with one acre of hemp producing as much fiber as 2 – 3 acres of cotton, 2x as much oil as an acre of peanuts, and as much paper as 4 acres of trees. The roots of a hemp plant are longer than other annually grown crops, which helps prevent soil erosion and helps regenerate polluted or infertile soil for most food-producing crops.

In fact, hemp is so effective at cleaning up contaminated soil that it was planted at Chernobyl following the nuclear disaster to help reduce soil toxicity. Hemp absorbs a lot of CO2, which is great for air quality and it grows super quickly.

This fast-growing crop requires less maintenance, only takes about 4-5 months to grow, and is ready for harvest about 120 days after planting, so it is great for sustainable rotation farming and boosting soil nutrients.

What are Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)

Substances that may have serious effects on human health and the environment can be identified as substances of very high concern (SVHCs). These are primarily substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction as well as substances with persistent and bio-accumulative characteristics. Other substances of equivalent concern include, for example, endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

After a substance has been officially identified in the EU as being of very high concern, it will be added to the Candidate List. This list indicates to consumers and industry which chemicals are identified as SVHCs.

Companies manufacturing or importing articles containing these substances in a concentration above 0,1% weight of the article have legal obligations. They are required to inform recipients of the articles about the presence of the substance and therefore how to use it safely. They also need to inform consumers requesting this information.

Substances placed on the Candidate List can move to the Authorisation List. This means that, after a given date, companies will not be allowed to place the hazardous substance on the market or to use it, unless they have been authorized to do so. One of the main aims of authorization is to phase out SVHCs where possible.

ECHA publishes information on SVHCs in consumer articles, combining information from registration dossiers and notifications it receives from the importers and producers of the articles.

Carcinogens, mutagens, and/or reproductive toxicants (CMRs)
Persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic chemicals
Chemicals of equivalent concern

A growing list

The Candidate List is published by ECHA and updated every six months. This official list of SVHCs at the EU level is based on proposals made by national authorities or ECHA, wide public consultation, and scientific rigor in the decision-making. The "Roadmap on Substances of Very High Concern" aims to have all relevant currently known SVHCs included in the Candidate List by 2020.

In addition, trade unions, non-governmental organizations, and some national governments have established their own lists of substances that they consider to be of concern because of their negative effects on human health or the environment.
