BABY SCENTS GUIDE

Soft, powdery, comforting "baby" fragrances are among the most loved scent families in home fragrance. This guide explains what they are, what they are not, and how to make and use them responsibly.

1. What are "baby scents"?

Baby scents are olfactory profiles inspired by the smells of early childhood: talc, freshly washed cotton, warm milk, soft flowers, and clean musks. The name describes the scent, not the user: no candle, wax melt or reed diffuser is a product "for babies."

2. What not to confuse

Term What it means What it does not mean
Allergen-free None of the 81 fragrance allergens that must be declared under Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 is present. It does not mean the fragrance can never cause a reaction: it may still contain other skin sensitisers, shown on the label as H317 or EUH208.
Hypoallergenic A cosmetic claim that requires evidence. It does not apply to candles or diffusers. Do not use it.
IFRA compliant The fragrance respects the maximum levels set for each product type. It is not a safety certification for babies or young children.
Natural / essential oil Of plant origin. Not automatically safer. Essential oils contain allergens (linalool, limonene…) and some—rich in menthol, camphor, or 1,8-cineole, such as peppermint or eucalyptus—are not recommended around young children.
Home fragrance oil Made for candles, wax melts, and diffusers. It is not a cosmetic. Never use it in baby creams, oils, bath products, or anything applied to the skin.

3. Good practice at home

  • Do not burn candles or use diffusers in a baby's room, especially while the baby is sleeping.
  • Prefer shared living areas, ventilate after use, and avoid continuous use—short sessions of 1–2 hours are enough.
  • Keep candles, wax melts, and diffusers out of reach of children: wax melts can look like sweets, and diffuser liquid is harmful if swallowed.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

4. For makers: making and selling responsibly

  • Use moderate fragrance loads—e.g., 6–8% in candles rather than the IFRA maximum—and fewer reeds in diffusers.
  • Label every product according to CLP (sensitizers under "Contains…" or EUH208), using the SDS of the dilution you use, and comply with the GPSR.
  • Reed diffusers classified for aspiration hazard (H304) and sold to the public need a child-resistant closure and a tactile warning (CLP, Annex II).
  • Products with health hazards may require a UFI and a poison center notification (PCN).

Claims to avoid: "safe for babies," "hypoallergenic," "non-toxic," "chemical-free," "helps your baby sleep," "calming."
Correct wording: "soft fragrance," "inspired by the scent of a baby," "free from declarable allergens" (only when true), "for sensitive spaces, with moderate use."

5. Our BABY SCENTS collection

Every fragrance in the BABY SCENTS collection has its full technical documentation available on the product page (SDS at each dilution, IFRA 51st Amendment certificate, and allergen declaration). Four of them carry our allergen-free stamp.
